SMEAR AFB
What does SMEAR AFB measure?
An AFB smear is a microscopic test that looks for acid-fast bacilli, a group of bacteria that includes those associated with tuberculosis. It may be used when symptoms or clinical findings raise concern for tuberculosis or other mycobacterial infection, and to help assess whether acid-fast organisms are present. Results are interpreted along with symptoms, imaging, medical history, and, when needed, additional laboratory tests.
